What is tallow?

Tallow is an animal fat (usually cow fat which is called beef tallow) that has been rendered down to remove impurities until only the solids remain. It is extremely versatile and nutrient dense. Its uses range from cooking, to soap making, to candle making, to skincare. It’s full of vitamins and minerals that nourish the body. Tallow has been widely used for generations, long before any artificial or highly processed fats were used in its place! The studies about harmful, highly processed fats are currently driving people to return to traditional ways, which is bringing many to benefit from the incredible uses of beef tallow.

Benefits of Tallow for Skincare

Tallow, especially grass-fed beef tallow, has a multitude of benefits for your skin. When tallow is used alone as a moisturizer or used within a skincare recipe, the nutrients provide robust nourishment to the skin and body. The nutrients found in tallow include fat-soluble vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, and more. Not to mention, tallow also has anti-inflammatory properties, and it works to lock in moisture. Think of it as your skin’s multi-vitamin!

Can I add essential oils to lip balm?

Yes, you may add skin-safe essential oils to your lip balm! You just need to make sure that it is diluted to the recommended dilution rate. You may add essential oils to the melted mixture before pouring into the lip balm tin if you would like to add fragrance. However, I personally find that keeping it simple without essential oils is best for my lips.

Does it smell or taste like beef?

This specific tallow lip balm recipe does not smell or taste like beef in any way to me. The beeswax has a light honey fragrance that masks any other smells that it may have. However, the “beefy” smell of tallow is largely dependent on the quality of tallow that you get. You can always make a batch and see what you think! And if it turns out to smell unpleasant, you can remelt the ingredients and add skin-safe essential oils to mask the smell.
