Your privacy is a big deal to me. In this policy, I lay out what information is collected when you visit everypurposehome.com (the “Site”), home of The Sourdough Cookie Lady, why it’s collected, who it’s shared with, and your rights. I promise I’ll never sell your name or email address: never have, never will.
When I say “I,” “me,” or “my,” I mean Every Purpose Home and Marlene, the person behind it. When I say “you,” I mean anyone who visits the Site, reads my posts, comments, or joins my email list.
If you’re a California resident or live in another state with a consumer privacy law, see Your rights with respect to your information below for additional details.
What I collect and why
My guiding principle is to collect only what’s needed to run the Site and share my recipes with you. Here’s what that means in practice:
Email list
When you sign up for my email list, I ask for your email address and sometimes your first name. That’s so I can send you the recipes, freebies, and updates you asked for. My email list is managed by Kit (formerly ConvertKit), which stores your information and may use tracking pixels to tell me whether emails are opened and links are clicked. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email. See Kit’s privacy policy.
Comments and recipe ratings
When you leave a comment or rate a recipe, I collect the name, email address, and website (if any) you enter, along with your IP address and browser information to help detect spam. Your name, comment, and rating are shown publicly; your email address is not. Comments may be checked by Akismet, an automated spam-detection service by Automattic. An anonymized string created from your email address (a “hash”) may be sent to Gravatar to see whether you use it; if you do, your Gravatar picture may appear next to your approved comment. If you choose to save your details for future comments, a cookie remembers your name, email, and website for one year.
Voluntary correspondence
When you email me or use the contact form, I keep that correspondence, including your email address, so I have a history to reference if you reach out again. The contact form uses Google reCAPTCHA to tell people from bots, which is subject to Google’s privacy policy and terms.
Website interactions
Like most websites, the Site automatically collects information about your visit for analytics and to keep the Site running well. This includes your browser and operating system, device type, IP address and general location (city or region), which pages you visited, and which website referred you. I use Jetpack Stats (by Automattic) and Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) for this. You can learn more in Automattic’s privacy policy and Google’s privacy policy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising (Mediavine Programmatic Advertising)
The Site works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Site. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Site, which may use first- and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file that is sent to your computer or mobile device (your “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Site.
First-party cookies are created by the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies are frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and are created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons, and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Site to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality that lets you block both first- and third-party cookies and clear your browser’s cache. The “help” feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies, and how to clear your browser’s cache. For more information about cookies and how to disable them, you can visit allaboutcookies.org.
Without cookies, you may not be able to take full advantage of the Site’s content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean you will no longer see ads when you visit the Site. If you opt out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements.
The Site collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads: IP address, operating system type and version, device type, language, web browser type, and email (in a hashed or encrypted form).
Mediavine Partners (the companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end-user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers, and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.
To learn more about the information Mediavine collects and how it is used, see Mediavine’s privacy policy and the list of Mediavine Partners. You can opt out of interest-based advertising from many companies through the Network Advertising Initiative and the Digital Advertising Alliance. On mobile devices, you can also limit ad tracking in your device settings.
Grow by Mediavine. The Site uses Grow, a Mediavine tool that helps readers save and share recipes and may ask whether you’d like to save content or sign in. Information you provide to Grow is handled under Grow’s and Mediavine’s privacy policies.
Video. The Site may display videos served by Mediavine’s video player, which may use cookies and collect viewing data.
Affiliate links
The Site contains affiliate links, including links for Amazon Associates and Sovrn Commerce (formerly VigLink). When you click an affiliate link, the retailer or affiliate network may place a cookie on your device to track the purchase so I can earn a small commission, at no additional cost to you. See my Affiliate Disclosure for details.
Cookies
A cookie is a small piece of text stored by your browser. Cookies help the Site remember your preferences (like a recipe card’s serving size or print settings), measure traffic, and show ads. The Site uses CookieYes to show a cookie notice and remember your cookie choices, which you can change at any time with the cookie settings link on the Site. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, although parts of the Site may not work as well without them.
Embedded content and sharing buttons
Posts may include embedded content (such as Pinterest pins, videos, or social posts) and sharing buttons. Embedded content behaves the same way as if you visited the other website directly, and those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interaction with the embedded content, especially if you have an account and are logged in there.
When I access or disclose your information
To provide the Site and the emails you’ve requested. I use third-party services (described above) to host the Site, send emails, measure traffic, filter spam, and show ads. They only receive the information they need to do their job.
To show ads that keep my recipes free. As described in the advertising section, Mediavine and its partners collect information through cookies to show and measure ads.
To investigate, prevent, or take action on spam, abuse, or security threats.
Aggregated and de-identified data. I may use aggregated or de-identified information (for example, “10,000 people viewed this recipe last month”) for any purpose, including sharing it with brands I work with.
When required under applicable law. I’ll only share your information with authorities if I’m legally required to, such as under a valid subpoena or court order.
Finally, if Every Purpose Home is ever sold or transferred (I don’t plan on that, but if it happens), your information may be transferred as part of that, and I’ll update this policy.
Your rights with respect to your information
I strive to apply the same data rights to everyone, regardless of where you live. Some of these rights include:
- Right to Know. You have the right to know what personal information is collected, used, shared, or sold. This policy outlines the categories of information collected and how they’re used.
- Right of Access. You have the right to request a copy of the personal information I hold about you.
- Right to Correction. You have the right to request correction of inaccurate personal information.
- Right to Erasure / “To Be Forgotten.” You have the right to request that your personal information be deleted, subject to certain limits under applicable law.
- Right to Opt Out of “Sale” or “Sharing.” I don’t sell your name or email address, but the advertising cookies on the Site may count as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising under some state laws. You can opt out at any time by clicking the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link at the bottom of the Site. The Site also honors Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where required.
- Right to Object or Restrict Processing. In certain situations, you have the right to object to or restrict how your information is used.
- Right to Portability. You have the right to receive the personal information I have about you in a usable format.
- Right to Complain. You have the right to make a complaint with the appropriate privacy authority.
- Right to Non-Discrimination. I won’t treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.
These rights apply to residents of California and other states with consumer privacy laws (including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, and others), and to visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland under the GDPR. For visitors in those regions, I rely on your consent for advertising cookies (which you can withdraw at any time in the cookie settings) and otherwise on my legitimate interest in running the Site, or on fulfilling a request you’ve made.
To exercise any of these rights, email me at contact@everypurposehome.com. I may need to verify your identity, such as by confirming your email address, before responding. If I deny your request, you may have the right to appeal, and I’ll explain how in my response.
Children’s privacy
The Site is not directed to children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact me and I’ll delete it.
How I secure your data
All data is encrypted via SSL/TLS (that’s the “https” in the address bar) when it’s sent between the Site and your browser. I also keep the Site’s software up to date and use reputable service providers. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but I take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Data retention
I keep your information only for as long as it’s needed for the purposes described in this policy. Comments and their details are kept indefinitely so follow-up comments can be approved automatically. Email list information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it. Contact form messages are kept in my email as long as needed to respond and for my records.
Location of site and data
The Site is run from the United States. If you’re visiting from outside the United States, please be aware that information collected through the Site will be transferred to and stored in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.
Changes and questions
I may update this policy as needed to reflect new services, practices, or legal requirements. Whenever I make a significant change, I’ll refresh the date at the top of this page.
Have questions, comments, or concerns about this privacy policy, your data, or your rights? Email me at contact@everypurposehome.com or use the contact form, and I’ll be happy to answer them!
