Fresh-baked caramel pear cobbler is just about one of the most beautiful sites on your kitchen counters. It’s the perfect way to use up fresh or store-bought pears that you want to get creative with. Not only that, but it’s healthier than other desserts because it’s made with whole wheat flour, and it is sweetened only with pure maple syrup!
Supplies
- Measuring cups and measuring spoons
- Spatula
- 12” cast iron skillet (or a standard skillet and 9”x13” baking dish instead)
- A bowl (I use my glass bowl set)
Ingredients
For the Pear Cobbler Filling:
- 8 medium pears (I use ripe Bartlett pears)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 3 tbsp. any flour of choice (all purpose, whole wheat, or I fresh-mill einkorn wheat in my NutriMill Harvest grain mill)
- 1 cup caramel sauce (I use my homemade maple caramel)
For the Crumble Topping:
- 1 cup dry oats (any variety)
- 1 cup any flour of choice (I use fresh-milled just like in the cobbler filling above)
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp. sea salt
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Peel and dice the pears. Place the pear chunks, water, and ground cinnamon in your skillet over medium heat. Cook for a few minutes until the pears begin to soften and release their own juices.
Sprinkle the pears with the flour, and cook for one minute, stirring constantly.
Add the caramel sauce, and cook for a few minutes to thicken. Remove from heat, and transfer to an oven-safe dish if necessary.
In a separate bowl, stir all of the crumble topping ingredients together. Sprinkle the topping over the filling in an even layer.
Finally, bake, uncovered, for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Enjoy!
Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For best care of your cast iron skillet, transfer leftovers to a glass container before refrigerating.
Substitutions
- To make this recipe gluten-free, be sure to use a gluten-free flour and verify that your oats are also free of gluten.
- You can omit either the oats or the flour from the crumble topping, and just double the one that you are using if you need to.
- You can add or remove any spices that you like. (Maybe try a pumpkin spice blend!)
Ways to Serve Caramel Pear Cobbler
- Try topping it with ice cream and drizzling on extra caramel sauce for dessert!
- Top it with fresh whipped cream for a lighter topping.
- For breakfast, serve warm (or cold!) with a protein.
Can I freeze cobbler?
You can freeze this pear cobbler for up to 3 months. And for best results, make the crumble topping fresh, just before baking!
To bake a frozen cobbler, you can either thaw the filling in advance, or you can follow the original baking instructions, but you may need to add 5-10 minutes to the baking time.
