After making your first sourdough focaccia bread recipe, you may think that it can’t get much better than that. But I’m here to tell you that sourdough focaccia pizza is going to change your life! Or at least your meal plan. Make your own with just a few easy steps, including some topping suggestions!
The Best Focaccia Pizza
One of the absolute best focaccia pizza recipes is actually one with no sauce! This is because sauce has the tendency to make the top of the dough soggy, which can affect that overall texture. I know it might sound crazy to have a pizza with no sauce, but garlic butter with cheese right on top is the best foundation for an amazing focaccia pizza. Then just throw on your favorite toppings and bake! And the deep sourdough flavor is the absolute perfect complement to any pizza toppings that you choose.
Make sure that when you layer your toppings on, you consider a few things. First, make sure that the toppings are ones that don’t release a ton of moisture when cooked, or else they will make a soupy mess on top of your pizza. Next, make sure that you consider which toppings you put on before you bake, and which ones go on afterwards. For example, fresh herbs and drizzles are best added after baking.
Supplies
- Large Bowl: I use the largest bowl from my glass bowl set.
- Spatula: I prefer a silicone spatula for this recipe.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons: I like these measuring cups and these measuring spoons.
- Baking Pan or Dish: I use my stainless steel baking sheet lined with unbleached parchment paper, but you can even use a well-oiled 9”x13” baking dish instead if you’d like.
- Cooling Rack: I use this black cooling rack that I’ve had forever!
Ingredients
- Sourdough Starter: Learn how to make your own sourdough starter.
- Sea Salt
- Filtered Water
- Flour: I use an all-purpose flour for my focaccia bread.
- Olive Oil
- Pizza Sauce and/or Toppings
Directions
Follow the directions to make sourdough focaccia bread dough, or other focaccia bread dough of choice. There is no need to pre-bake.
Top the prepared dough as desired in this order: sauce, cheese, toppings.
Bake according to bread directions, until the bread is cooked through, the cheese is melted, and the toppings are cooked to your liking. Optionally broil the top for a minute to brown the cheese more.
Add any remaining fresh toppings, and enjoy!
